Govt aims to strengthen fisheries cooperation with Cape Verde
Representatives from the Governments of Spain and Cape Verde have gathered in the African country to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation on fisheries. The meeting was attended by the secretary general for the Sea's of Spain, Juan Carlos Martin Fragueiro, and the Minister for the Environment, Rural Development and Marine Resources for Cape Verde, Maria Jose Veiga, who agreed on the need to collaborate in areas such as fishery training, research, health and hygiene conditions aswell as aquaculture. The Spanish official rewarded certificates to 40 students participating in the National Institute for Fisheries Development (INDP) and the Port Maritime Institute (IMP) in Cape Verde, informs the Ministry for the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM). Martin Fragueiro and the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, José Maria Pereira Neves, chaired the event which was also attended by Veiga. Participants of the 'Cooperative Programme for Training in Marine Fisheries and Aquaculture' spent 15 days on board the fishing vessel "Intermares", which is 79 meters long and has 49 cabins, classrooms, laboratories, meeting rooms, a library, dining rooms and a swimming pool for practicing maritime rescue. The training program is supported by the Director General of Fisheries Management. The Intermares was submitted on 16 September 2009 as the first global sea-fishing training vessel. The main purposes of the ship, which is owned by MARM, is to increase knowledge in the field aswell as training. With this new ship, Spain seeks to strengthen international fishing cooperation, particularly with countries in Latin America and Africa. The Intermares "is an innovative commitment by the Government of Spain to support international cooperation and to promote fishing research, which has been constructed by MARM over the last nine years, including the Emma Barden, Viscount de Eza and Michael Oliver," stressed the Minister.
